This is a strictly summer-growing species that responds to the heat and erratic moisture of the Horn of Africa. In cultivation, it requires high temperatures and should be kept completely dry and warm—ideally above 15°C / 59°F—during its winter dormancy to prevent rot.
Origin: Northeastern Somalia, specifically from the Bari and Nugaal regions (formerly known as the Migiurtinia region). It grows in extremely arid, stony limestone plains and low hills, often in grit or sandy alluvial soils in a dry tropical desert environment.
