These are strictly summer growers that respond to the erratic monsoon rains of the region. They require high heat and bright light to grow. In cultivation, they are notoriously sensitive and must be kept completely dry and warm—ideally above 15°C/60°F—during their winter dormancy to prevent rot.

Origin: Horn of Africa, primarily Somalia, but also extending into eastern Ethiopia and southern Oman (for P. mccoyi). They grow in extremely arid, stony, or gravelly limestone plains and low hills, often in full sun or tucked among small rocks.
