In habitat, it relies heavily on coastal fog camanchaca, which is most consistent in the winter and spring months, but it will grow opportunistically whenever moisture is available.

Origin: Northern Chile, endemic to the coastal desert region from the Atacama to the Coquimbo Regions. It forms large, dense clumps in very arid areas, typically on dry, rocky slopes and plains.
