This species follows the typical Mexican cactus cycle, growing during the warm, rainy summer months. It requires a distinct dry winter dormancy to prevent rot and encourage spring flowering.
Origin
Central Mexico, specifically endemic to the state of Guanajuato. it is found in the Barranca de Xichú, growing on steep volcanic (rhyolitic) rock cliffs and rocky slopes in semi-desert scrub at elevations around 800–1,100 meters.
