Growth occurs during the warm summer rainy season, during which the plants can remain submerged under water for days. In the dry winter season, they pull themselves deep into the ground, often becoming completely buried, and require a strictly dry dormancy.
Origin
Mexico, specifically the state of San Luis Potosí. It is endemic to a large, flat, drainless basin (the Rio Verde lagoon region) between Rio Verde, Las Tablas, and Palomas. It grows in soft alluvial sediments on shallow lake beds that often flood during the rainy season.
