Adapted to a tropical semi-arid climate with distinct warm rainy seasons and dry winters, this succulent actively pushes growth during the hot months. In a coastal Zone 10b environment, it thrives outdoors under a protective layer of shade cloth; because its delicate variegated tissue lacks full chlorophyll concentration, intense direct sun will easily scorch and blister the stems. A polycarbonate roof is vital during winter to block out heavy rains that can cause stem rot. It demands a fast-draining, mineral-heavy substrate—such as an 80% pumice blend mixed with decomposed granite and a small fraction of organic mix. Housed in a breathable raw cement pot, water deeply during the peak heat of summer when actively growing, ensuring the substrate dries out completely between waterings, and reduce water significantly during the cooler winter months while keeping it frost-free.

Origin

Kenya and East Africa (Horticultural Variegated Form). While the species type originates from the rocky, arid limestone outcrops of the coastal and interior lowlands of East Africa, this specific variegated form is a stabilized horticultural selection. In its native habitat, the species forms low-growing, sprawling succulent shrubs with tuberculate, finger-like stems that store water to survive prolonged seasonal droughts. This variegated cultivar is prized for its striking cream, yellow, and soft green chimeric striping across the stems and small deciduous leaves, giving it a luminous, high-contrast appearance.
