As a geophytic species from the Mediterranean climate zone of central Chile, it responds to the winter rainfall. It grows actively in the cooler months and enters a deep dormancy during the dry summer, though it remains opportunistic whenever moisture and mild temperatures coincide.

Origin: Central Chile, specifically endemic to a very narrow coastal strip in the O'Higgins Region (Province of Cardenal Caro) and northern Maule. It is famously found in the vicinity of Hacienda Tanumé, where it grows in coastal terraces and hills, often buried almost flush with the soil among rocks and sparse scrub.
