This is a classic summer grower. It does most of its growing during the warm, sunny months and requires a dry winter rest period to prevent rot.

Origin: Central Mexico, historically endemic to a small area in the Moctezuma River Valley (Querétaro and Hidalgo border). Much of its original habitat near Zimapán was submerged by a dam, but new populations were later discovered in Zacatecas. It grows on steep volcanic slopes and limestone cliffs.
