Notes
In a cement pot by Prickly Point In habitat, it relies on infrequent winter rains and the high-altitude fogs that reach the inland hills. It is highly opportunistic and will grow whenever moisture is available during warmer periods.
Origin
Northern Chile, Atacama Region. It is endemic to the inland hills and rocky slopes south and east of the city of Vallenar, specifically in areas like the Cuesta de Pajonales and Paso de los Loros. Unlike the coastal species, it grows further inland in extremely arid, gravelly soil, often partially buried to protect its large tuberous root.
