Field Number: JN 855
Acquired: about 1 month ago

In its hyper-arid habitat, growth is entirely dependent on the camanchaca fog. It is most active during the cooler, fog-heavy months of winter and spring, but remains opportunistic.

Origin: Northern Chile, Atacama Region. It is found in the extremely arid coastal mountains north of Paposo, specifically on the steep, rocky slopes and high ridges of the Sierra Esmeralda. It grows further inland and at higher elevations than many other coastal species, where it survives in one of the driest places on Earth by intercepting high-altitude fog.
