In a cement pot by Prickly Point In habitat, it rehydrates and grows primarily during the cooler months when fog is most consistent. In cultivation, it is often treated as a summer grower but is very slow-growing and highly sensitive to overwatering.

Origin: Northern Chile, specifically in the Antofagasta and Chañaral regions. It is most iconic on the arid, rocky coastal hills and mountains surrounding the town of Taltal. It thrives in extremely dry conditions where it relies almost exclusively on the coastal camanchaca fog for moisture.
