In a coastal Zone 10b environment, it thrives outdoors beneath the protective diffusion of shade cloth and a polycarbonate roof, which shields its powder-blue epidermis from harsh midday sunburn while blocking out cold winter rains. Because it is a robust columnar cactus that is sensitive to stagnant dampness, it demands an uncompromisingly fast-draining, highly porous mineral substrate—such as a coarse blend of pumice, decomposed granite, and calcined clay. Housed in a sturdy, breathable raw cement pot, it appreciates deep, thorough waterings during the peak heat of summer, provided the mineral mix dries out rapidly between soakings.
