Notes

This hybrid drives its primary vegetative development and intense leaf patterning during the mild weather of autumn and spring, slowing down its metabolic rate during mid-winter chills and stagnant mid-summer heat. It pushes slender inflorescences with tubular flowers in late winter to spring, relying on its thick, water-storing leaves to easily navigate dry spells. In cultivation, it requires an exceptionally sharp-draining mineral substrate (such as an 80% to 90% pumice and gritty mix with minimal organics) to protect its root system from rot, and should be watered thoroughly only when the potting medium has dried out completely, backing off significantly during seasonal temperature extremes. https://media.huntington.org/ISI/ISI2014/2014-14.html

Origin

Cultivar origin (hybridized by John Zimmerman). This striking cultivar is a complex hybrid created by John Zimmerman and named for a close friend of Karen Zimmerman. Its precise lineage is Aloe 'Dragon' × (A. 'Kelly Griffin #5' × A. 'Paul Hutchison'). While born in cultivation, its genetic background traces back heavily to the unique succulent flora of Madagascar and South Africa. Visually, 'Marsha Layhew' features slender, bluish, lanceolate leaves that taper evenly. The foliage is beautifully ornamented with bands of pale green, elongated tubercles topped with fine, maroon, conical teeth that merge into ridges, while the leaf margins bear prominent, distinct trapezoidal teeth with heavily lacerate (ragged) tips.
