This species is a summer grower, coinciding with the erratic monsoon rains of the Horn of Africa. It is highly sensitive to cold and excess moisture, requiring a very dry and warm dormancy in winter to prevent rot.

Origin: Northern Somalia, specifically endemic to the arid mountains of the Sanaag region (formerly British Somaliland). It grows on stony gypseous hillsides and rocky slopes in an extremely harsh, hot, and dry environment.
