In a cement pot by Prickly Point
This species is a highly specialized "opportunistic" grower that activates primarily during the hot, humid periods typical of its tropical arid home. While it can show growth in late spring and autumn, its main metabolic activity occurs in summer. It enters a protective dormancy during the cooler winter months.Because it is exceptionally sensitive to moisture when temperatures drop, it requires a "dry-rest" period in winter. In cultivation, it thrives on a high-mineral substrate (like 80% pumice or gravel) to mimic the sharp drainage of its limestone habitat and prevent the taproot from rotting during its inactive phases.
Origin
East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. It is native to northern Somalia and Oman. It grows in extremely arid, rocky habitats, often found on limestone plateaus or grit-covered plains. Its rugose, twiggy-looking stems provide remarkable camouflage among the weathered stones and dry scrub of its native environment.
