Notes
Like its parentage, this hybrid follows a Mediterranean-influenced growth cycle that favors the cooler shoulder seasons. It is most active during the spring and autumn when night temperatures drop significantly. While it can be opportunistic year-round in controlled environments, it often enters a semi-dormancy during the extreme heat of mid-summer and the cold of mid-winter. In summer, the plant may retract slightly into the soil as a moisture-saving strategy. In cultivation, this hybrid requires a very open and porous substrate to accommodate its thick, contractile roots. A mineral-heavy mix—typically around 80% pumice—is ideal to prevent the stagnation of water around the root neck. It prefers bright, indirect light rather than the harsh, direct sun required by most cacti, as the translucent windows are designed to filter light into the interior of the leaves. High humidity combined with stagnant air is its primary enemy, so good ventilation is essential during its active growing periods.
Origin
This is a hybrid between two iconic South African species that are both native to the Little Karoo region of the Western Cape. Haworthia truncata is typically found in the Calitzdorp area, while Haworthia maughanii is centered around Calitzdorp and Oudtshoorn. In the wild, both parent species grow almost entirely buried in the soil, with only their translucent leaf tips (fenestrae) exposed to the sun to allow for photosynthesis. This hybrid combines the fan-shaped growth of truncata with the more rounded, cylindrical leaf form of maughanii.
