In a cement pot by Prickly Point In its native habitat, it relies on infrequent winter rains and coastal fog for moisture. In cultivation, it is often treated as a summer grower but must be kept very well-drained and allowed a dry winter rest.
Origin: Northern Chile, specifically the Atacama Region. It is endemic to a very narrow coastal strip south of the city of Huasco, growing in extremely arid, stony, or gravelly soils on low coastal hills and terraces. The plants are often buried flush with the ground to protect their large, tuberous taproots.
