Notes
Unlike many desert succulents, this Echeveria prefers the moderate temperatures of the shoulder seasons. It is most active during the spring and autumn when days are bright but the intense heat of summer has subsided. It often slows down or enters a semi-dormancy during the extreme heat of mid-summer and the cold of winter. In high summer, the red "lipstick" edges often become most intense as a stress response to light and heat. It is particularly susceptible to crown rot if water sits in the rosette for too long. To mimic its mountain-side drainage, it thrives in a very gritty mix. While it can handle more organic matter than a Copiapoa, it still benefits from a high-mineral substrate to maintain its compact shape and prevent the leaves from becoming "leggy" or bloated.
Origin
This is a cultivated selection of Echeveria agavoides, which is native to the rocky, high-altitude regions of Mexico, particularly in the states of San Luis Potosí, Hidalgo, Guanajuato, and Durango. In habitat, the species grows on steep, volcanic cliffs and limestone outcrops. The "Lipstick" cultivar is specifically selected for its vivid red margins that contrast sharply against the lime-green leaves.
