Notes
The monstrose mutation causes disordered growth points, producing a dense, irregular cluster of small globose heads rather than a symmetrical stem. Features a nearly black to dark purple epidermis — an adaptation for absorbing heat from coastal fog. In its natural habitat, the species survives by extracting moisture from the camanchaca (coastal fog) rather than rainfall. Water moderately during the growing season, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. Grows slowly. Requires bright light to full sun.
Origin
Coastal hills south of Antofagasta, Atacama Desert, Chile. Grows in fragmented stones and rocky slopes on steep coastal desert hillsides. In habitat, the species survives near-zero rainfall by absorbing moisture from coastal fog (camanchaca). The monstruosa form is a nursery-cultivated mutant and does not occur naturally in habitat.
