Notes
In a clay pot by Doctor Prickly. Growing at 600m, this variety is a specialist in moisture harvesting from clouds. It is most active during the cooler months of winter and early spring when fog density is highest. In its habitat, the granite and schist substrate provides impeccable drainage. In cultivation, the KK 1708 field number is often associated with plants that develop a striking contrast between their dark spines and the characteristic white-grey waxy epidermis. It demands a strictly mineral soil—specifically a high ratio of pumice and decomposed granite—to accommodate its sensitive taproot. Watering should be infrequent and timed with cooler evening temperatures to mimic the nocturnal fog cycles of the Paposo ridges; it should be kept dry during the peak summer heat to respect its natural dormancy. https://mesagarden.com/product/copiapoa-haseltoniana-eremophila-kk1708-84-48
Origin
Northern Chile. This specific collection by Karel Kníže originates from the rugged heights above Paposo, in the Antofagasta region. At an altitude of 600m, these plants sit within the primary "fog belt," where the coastal Camanchaca pushes against the steep slopes of the Coastal Range (Cordillera de la Costa). This variety is noted for its more solitary habit and more robust, darker spination compared to the standard C. haseltoniana, and it often exhibits a beautiful orange-to-yellow woolly crown when mature.
