Notes
Adapted to the high coastal elevations of the Atacama Desert, this variety thrives on condensed humidity from the seasonal camanchaca sea fogs. In a coastal Zone 10b environment, maintaining strict aridity and maximum UV sun exposure is essential to preserve its characteristic porcelain-white wax and intense, dark spination; excess organic matter or stagnant moisture will cause the plant to bloat, lose its waxy coating, and succumb to root rot. It demands an exceptionally porous, fast-draining mineral substrate, making an 80% premium pumice blend cut with coarse decomposed granite and calcined clay ideal to mimic the sterile granitic scree of Cifuncho. Cultivating this slow-growing specimen in a hand-crafted, highly breathable raw cement pot provides vital root stability while wicking away residual moisture around the base. Water must be applied with extreme restraint only during warm summer stretches, allowing the pot to dry out completely between soakings, and strictly withheld throughout a cold, bone-dry winter rest beneath a solid polycarbonate roof to shield against seasonal rains.
Origin
Chile. This distinct field collection by Karel Kníže (KK 1434) originates from an elevation of roughly 300 to 500 meters in the hills surrounding Cifuncho (south of Taltal) in the Antofagasta Region of the Atacama Desert. The varietal name horrida refers to its unusually aggressive, robust armature. Compared to standard forms, this variety features a compact globose to shortly columnar stem coated in heavy chalky-white epicuticular wax, armed with unusually long, stout, jet-black to dark brownish spines that project fiercely from prominent, woolly areoles. During late summer, it produces satiny yellow flowers directly out of its dense apical woolly crown.
