Notes
Because this specimen has been de-grafted and is now relying entirely on its own adventitious root system, root health requires heightened discipline. De-grafted Copiapoa roots are initially fine, superficial, and exceptionally sensitive to lingering moisture or soil compaction. In a coastal Zone 10b environment, maintaining strict mineral aridity is essential to encourage strong root development and promote the formation of its natural epicuticular wax. It demands a hyper-porous, sharply draining substrate, making an 80% to 90% premium pumice blend cut with coarse decomposed granite ideal. Cultivating it in a shallow, highly breathable raw cement pot ensures rapid moisture evacuation around the fresh root base. Water must be applied conservatively only during warm, breezy periods of active summer growth, allowing the substrate to dry completely between light soakings, and enforced with a strictly bone-dry winter dormancy under a solid polycarbonate roof to protect against cold seasonal rains.
Origin
Garden Origin / Cultivated Hybrid (Copiapoa cinerea lineage, native to the Atacama Desert, Chile). While pure Copiapoa cinerea originates from the barren, fog-drenched coastal bluffs surrounding Taltal, this specimen represents a cultivated hybrid selected for distinct morphological traits (such as unique spine density, body shape, or variable wax production). Because it has been de-grafted—severed from its fast-growing rootstock and rooted onto its own scion roots—it combines the accelerated early growth of a grafted plant with the authentic, compact, and natural appearance of a seed-grown specimen. It features a globose to short-columnar body with a pale greyish-green to chalky epidermis, protected by a prominent apical crown of wool and crisp, rigid spination inherited from its cinerea lineage.
