HBG 143017 Sd ex Rob Skilin 8/28/23 Hooked spines, long white hairs, large 2" magerta fls. This species grows primarily during the warm, rainy summer months. It is particularly sensitive to cold and excess moisture, requiring a strictly dry, frost-free dormancy in winter to prevent rot and promote its characteristic large purple flowers.

Origin: Mexico. While historically considered a narrow endemic of the Rio Nazas valley and the Indé Municipality in Durango, recent taxonomic revisions (POWO/ISI) list its native range as extending into Coahuila and Nuevo León. It typically grows on volcanic rocky outcrops and grassy mountain tops at elevations between 1,300 and 1,700 meters.
