Notes
This species is a vigorous summer grower, timing its main vegetative expansion with the warm weather and seasonal summer rainfall of the Argentine mountains. It explodes into life in late spring, producing a spectacular display of large, bright orange-scarlet, funnel-shaped flowers that completely obscure the small stems. It enters a deep, cold-hardy dormancy during the dry winter months. In cultivation, it thrives in a well-draining, mineral-dominant substrate (like an 80% pumice and 20% organic mix) and benefits from regular water during the heat of summer. It requires a cold, completely dry winter rest to trigger abundant budding for the following spring.
Origin
Argentina. It is native to the high-altitude, semi-arid habitats of the Tucumán province in the northwest region of the country. This distinctive cactus grows tucked into rocky crevices, mountain slopes, and gravelly grasslands at elevations between 1,200 and 1,800 meters. It forms extensive, low-growing mats of pale green, prostrate stems that fracture easily at the joints—an evolutionary strategy allowing broken pieces to root independently where they fall.
