Notes
While often labeled a summer grower, this species follows a more opportunistic, bimodal cycle governed by the Mexican monsoon. It experiences a primary growth spurt in late spring to early summer, often followed by a brief semi-dormancy during the extreme heat of mid-summer (July). A second, vigorous growth and flowering phase occurs in late summer and autumn (August to October). It enters a deep dormancy in winter and should be kept completely dry to protect its large, fleshy taproot from rot.
Origin
North-central Mexico. It is one of the most widely distributed species in the genus, ranging from Coahuila and Nuevo León in the north, down through Tamaulipas and Zacatecas, to San Luis Potosí in the south. It is an obligate gypsophile, typically found on limestone hills, rocky slopes, and gypsum-rich plains in the Chihuahuan Desert, often growing at altitudes between 1,300 and 2,000 meters.
