It typically forms small, dense clumps or mounds. The stems can be suberect (standing up) or decumbent (trailing along the ground). This is a winter-growing succulent adapted to the Mediterranean climate of the Western Cape. it grows during the cool, rainy winter months and enters a state of dormancy during the hot, dry summer.

Origin: Western Cape, South Africa. This species is the type for the genus and is widespread across the southwestern Cape, from the Cape Peninsula north to the Cederberg and east into the Little Karoo. It typically grows in rocky crevices on sandstone or granite outcrops, often in Fynbos or Succulent Karoo vegetation.
