This is a summer-growing species native to the high-altitude desert. It receives rainfall during the warm summer months and requires a cold, dry dormancy in winter.
Origin: Northwestern Argentina, specifically in the Catamarca Province. It is endemic to the dry valleys and rocky hillsides surrounding the town of Belén and extending towards Hualfín. It grows in alluvial, sandy soils among sparse scrub vegetation.
